Professor Ferrari's main research interests are:

• the creation, design, and analysis of communication protocols and services for real-time traffic (in particular, audio and video) on packet-switching, integrated-services networks and internetworks
• the charging algorithms for multimedia communication services on integrated-services networks
• the invention and design of innovative Internet services
• the study of new business applications (in particular, electronic commerce) and new social applications (in particular, the assistance to the elderly and disabled) of telematics
• the construction of tools that will allow any Internet user to create and manage a virtual network on top of Internet itself for the purposes of a group of which that user is a member
